For over 30 years I've had the good fortune to practice wound care, conduct research, and educate students, residents and fellows as a faculty member at an academic medical centers and also serve as a co-chair for the Symposium on Advanced Wound Care (SAWC). I highly recommend that medical students consider learning more about wound care to either better educate themselves about evidence-based treatment and management of chronic wounds or consider becoming a practicing wound care physician.  In any case, physicians will encounter these wounds in most areas of clinical practice with our aging population along with the rising incidence of diabetes mellitus and obesity.
